"Respect"

This day in history, February 14, 1966, Aretha Franklin records her hit single ``Respect'' at Atlantic Studios. The million-selling record is written by Otis Redding and tops Billboard's Hot 100 for two weeks.

This video was posted last year, it states the song was recorded in 1967. It doesn't matter, it is one of the most well-known songs ever recorded, with a DEFINITE place in history. Because it was a song recorded smack dab in the middle of the Civil Rights movement. So watch this video and go back in history, to how the music, and this song in particular, voiced the cries of the oppressed.

Four decades ago, Aretha Franklin topped the charts and captured an era with "Respect." Hear it, sing it, talk about it and test your knowledge. Check out our video package, story, photos, quiz and more...

"Have people really gained the respect and dignity that human beings should have? The answer is no. So with that in mind, the song is just as fresh"

And how do WE as human beings respond? That is the question.

Read, also from what is now history, the essay, "The Meaning of Rachel Corrie, of Dignity and Solidarity" by the late Edward Said.

Know, that whenever one man is oppressed, we are ALL oppressed, for we are ALL children of the same blessed creator. In unity and solidarity as human beings we CAN make a difference.
