Water Crisis in the Middle East 

Does water scarcity further danger the stability in the region? Does
it effect the economical policies in the countries? Will there be a
water war in the Middle East in the near future? And what can be done?

Aquifers and rivers have been drying up since the early 90's, the
Middle East, which is 85% desert, holds 5% of the world's population
with only 1% of it's water and with the rapid population growth in the
region, the situation is bound to get worst. Demand for water has
already surpassed supply and the current supply is unstable.

Water resources cross political boundaries and many countries share
the same aquifers and rivers which are creating  precariously
ambiguous boundaries.In 1979 Anwar Sadat, the President of Egypt had
declared that the only mater that could take Egypt to war again is
Water. King Hussein had similar predictions in the 90's.

Today Radio Intifada will discuss the depleting water crisis in the
Middle East with guests:
  
JULIA BUCKNELL, author of The World Bank's Regional Report on
water and a specialist in resource management for Middle East and
North Africa.
   
GRETA BERLIN, a Palestinian activist from Women in Black.

MARK LEVINE, professor of History at UCI and the author of the
upcoming book, "An Impossible Peace; Oslo and the Burden of History."
