Major Antiwar Actions this Fall: End Iraq War Bring Troops Home Now!

Lee Siu Hin

September 1, 2007

For the next two months dozens of major national and local antiwar mobilizations will take place across the country to demand an end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, that the troops be brought home now and that no attack be waged upon Iran!

In September, General Petraeus will deliver his report on the US war in Iraq, and the Congress will face the decision of funding another year of war. Republicans and Democrats will consider the future of US operations in Iraq.

With the death of nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq, billions of dollars have been wasted and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed. Some estimates, extrapolated from the British medical journal The Lancet's June 2006 estimate of over 650,000 Iraqi casualties, and other sources, put the current number at one million or more.

For the first time seventy percent of people in the US now oppose the war and occupation in Iraq. The daily mounting death toll, the countless wounded, the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure and the robbing of communities at home in order to pay for all this madness provide peace activists with the critical mass of outrage needed for mobilizing the seventy percent into action.

Following is a list of upcoming antiwar campaigns. Please refer to this month's calendar for contact information.

Though begun early last month The Occupation Project is expected to continue through at least the end of September. Initiated by Voices for Creative Nonviolence, the Project is a series of nonviolent civil disobedience actions and occupations of congressional offices.

* Sept. 11: National General Strike opposing the Wars with concern for other issues as well.

* Sept. 11-14: Rally in Washington, DC and lobbying for Peace, 9-11 Truth and Impeachment.

* Sept. 12: National call-in day to end the Iraq War.

* Sept. 14-21: Declaration of Peace - a week of coordinated nonviolent actions in Washington, DC and locally including Congressional lobbying and direct actions.

* Sept. 15: Turn Up the Heat Protest in Washington, DC - call by International ANSWER

* Sept. 15-23: Chalk for Peace for worldwide peace awareness.

* Sept. 17: Operation Student Privacy (and other independent groups) locally distributing military recruitment Opt-Out forms at schools (Sept. 18 - Oct. 26 window to reply).

* Sept. 17: Truth in Recruiting national day of action and kickoff for an extended campaign.

* Sept. 19-20: Speak Truth to Power non-violent direct action to end the Iraq War in Washington DC.

* Sept. 21: Iraq Moratorium Campaign - an escalating, monthly series of actions demanding an end to the war. Beginning at September 21 and continues the 3rd Friday of every month thereafter.

* Sept. 22- 29: Encampment in front of Congress - Troops Out Now Coalition calls for a week of peace camp in front of Congress and a march on September 29.
See the Calendar for separate local actions.

* Oct. 4-13: Keep Space for Peace Week, national actions and lobbying. (This site also has international actions for
the week)

* Oct. 21-23: No War, No Warming - call by coalition of climate justice groups across the country, days of local and national actions to highlight the connections between the war in Iraq and the global warming crisis.

* Oct. 27: Major Regional Antiwar Mobilizations - call by United For Peace & Justice (UFPJ). A national day of action includes eight or more massive regional demonstrations to take place around the US as the culmination to all the foregoing efforts. Regional mobilizations will make it much easier for larger numbers of people to participate, and make it dramatically clear that opposition to the war and occupation in Iraq is strong, active, and nationwide.

The People have spoken: enough is enough, let's mobilize our community, friends, veterans and family to demand an end to the war in Iraq and bring the troops home now!

A Pivotal Moment

always, there will be many important issues our representatives in Washington must take up in the days and weeks ahead, but is there really anything more pressing than the urgent need to take decisive action to end the U.S. war and occupation in Iraq? Almost 10 months ago, voters declared their widespread opposition to the war in the midterm Congressional elections. But Congress has yet to take up the mandate they were sent to Washington with.

This month will be pivotal in determining the future of the war in Iraq. Will Congress use its power of the purse to force an end to the war and the withdrawal of all U.S. troops and contractors, or will the Bush administration get the additional $190+ billion it wants to continue this deadly and disastrous occupation into the unforeseeable future?

Because of the importance of these next few months, many actions are being organized. They take different forms, but all share the same goal: ending the war and bringing all of the U.S. troops home now! We call your attention to three of these efforts in particular, initiated and/or endorsed by United for Peace and Justice. We believe these activities will help strengthen our movement and keep the heat on Washington.

Thursday, Sept. 7: National Congressional Call-In!

Join the nationwide effort to flood the offices of your members of Congress with calls demanding an end to the U.S. war in Iraq and no new war with Iran. Let's make it clear: Congress must stand up to the Bush war machine! Call your representative and both of your senators at 202-224-3121, and ask to be connected to their offices. Tell them: I want you to act now to end the war and occupation of Iraq and to prevent a war with Iran. The Congress has the constitutional right and a moral responsibility to use the power of the purse to withdraw all U.S. soldiers and contractors from Iraq on a rapid and binding schedule. Congress must act to prevent a catastrophic war with Iran. On August 28, President Bush announced that he has authorized U.S. forces in Iraq to confront Iran militarily -- please speak out against and oppose this policy! (Click here to find out who represents you in Congress.)

Sept. 14-21: Declaration of Peace/Days of Decision - a week of nationwide coordinated local actions
Declare Peace! by taking nonviolent action, including nonviolent civil disobedience or other forms of creative, peaceful witness at congressional offices or other relevant sites anytime from Friday, September 14, through Friday, September 21, the International Day of Peace. Declaration of Peace organizers ask that your local actions include at least these two components: (1) a public declaration such as an exhibit, a presentation to a member of Congress or his or her staff, or an event that includes a public signing of the Comprehensive Peace Plan for Iraq, and (2) nonviolent actions to dramatically highlight the reality of the war, such as a public die-in or other forms of creative, peaceful protest and action. To find out more, visit: www.declarationofpeace.org

Friday, Sept. 21: Iraq Moratorium
National in scope, the Iraq Moratorium is a campaign that takes place at the most local level possible. The idea is simple: Antiwar forces are coming together in their own areas to plan local activities that are easy for the largest numbers of people to get involved in, especially people who have never done anything publicly to oppose the war. On the 3rd Friday of every month, beginning on Sept. 21, these activities will take place: People from all walks of life will break with their daily routine to take some concrete step to demand an end to the war and the return home of the troops. This can be as simple as wearing black ribbons and armbands in mourning for all who have died in this senseless catastrophe. More information is available at www.iraqmoratorium.org, and in Spanish at www.moratorioirak.org.

As you can see from all of these activities, pressure is mounting and it's not going to stop once September is over. On October 27, 10 massive demonstrations initiated by United for Peace and Justice will be held in cities around the country. This national day of action to end the war will show that opposition to the war is strong, growing and stepping up to take action nationwide. Visit www.oct27.org in the coming days for more updates and information on how to get involved in the demonstration in your region.

Check the UFPJ events calendar for many other nationally coordinated as well as regional and local actions. Please post any activity you are planning or know about on the calendar so others can find it and join you.

One Last Note -- Preventing the Next War
Through it all, we need to keep up the pressure to prevent an attack on Iran. For analysis, petitions, and other resources, click here.

Yours, for peace and justice,

In total, forty-one US war resisters in Canada have applied for asylum.

Information on war resistance within the military can be found at The Objector, The G.I. Rights Hotline, Iraq Veterans Against the War and the War Resisters Support Campaign. Courage to Resist offers information on all public war resisters. Tom Joad maintains a list of known war resisters. The G.I. Rights Hotline link has been included in the snapshots forever now, but please note that this is a new website. The new website is still being upgarded (but working) and with the new website comes a new phone number (877) 4474487 which is "GI RGHTS" the name but missing the second "I". To make sure everyone's aware that there is a new number and a new (toll free) number, we'll included this notice in the snapshot all week. Again, The G.I. Rights Hotline is a new and improved (and new and improving) website that will begin replacing the old site.
